SMSC is a family friendly club of rock climbers and hill walkers based at the Aspire Centre. We welcome new members. We have regular away days and weekends. We are affiliated to the British Mountaineering Council who provide a range of services and insurance. Our recent activities have included family rock climbing days at Bowles and Portland and a walking day on the North Downs. Portland is a popular ‘sport climbing’ venue with our members making progress from artificial wall climbing to the great outdoors. The amount of climbing available on this sunny peninsular continues to increase with more routes being equipped each year in many locations.
Further afield, an intrepid group did Snowdonia and back in a day (very early start and late return), to do traditional multi-pitch climbing on the Idwal crag. This is a crag where many have started llustrious climbing careers Late snow in the Alps provided a logistical challenge for a group to ski Chamonix for a weekend via City airport. This was a great uccess and next year we will be looking to include the Valle Blanche in our weekend trip.
In response to requests from members we have run workshops at the Aspire Centre on rope-work, First Aid for hill walkers and climbers, and navigation. These have been delivered by the members themselves who have experience and professional qualifications. These sessions are open to non-members. We have recently purchased a set of equipment for members who climb on southern sandstone (outcrop rope, krabs, slings and guide book).
The next adult climbing wall induction will be on Thursday 17th September from 6pm.
